WATER COMPANIES HAVE OVER 1,100 CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS FOR SEWAGE POLLUTION AND OTHER INCIDENTS
So, can we really trust the quality of our tapwater?
Trust Has To Be Earned…
We’re told that our tapwater meets all health regulations. So should we be worried that official figures show that the ten main water companies in England and Wales have more than 1,109 criminal convictions between them since privatisation, and have been fined some £500 million by OFWAT, the water regulator, as a result?
Worryingly, neither the number of heavy fines, nor Environment Agency oversight, has been enough to stop them from continuing to harm our water sources and polluting our rivers, lakes and seas over the last 35 years. The latest incident being the release of at least 143 million litres of raw sewage over some 165 hours into Lake Windermere, a UNESCO world heritage site
Regrettably, this is not the worst of it with the Environment Agency reporting that there were 3.6 million hours – that’s nearly 411 years’ worth – of sewage spills by water companies in England and Wales in 2023.
The Agency is now undertaking the “largest ever criminal investigation into potential widespread non-compliance by water companies”, whilst the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs is “carrying out a full review of the water sector to shape further legislation”.
Not Just Sewage, But Drugs And Microplastics, Too
Micro- and nano-plastics are now even found in the so-called pristine waters of the Antarctic, as far away from people and civilisation as it’s possible to go. Closer to home, they’re finding their way into the food we eat and are in the air we breathe – as well as in our water sources which are being carried right through to the water in our taps. Recent research has also discovered that drug residues are not just an urban problem and the water sources used by our cities, but can also be found in remote locations in the waters in our national parks.
