With both plastic debris and microplastics present even in the waters of ‘pristine’ Antarctica, we’ve been aware for some time about how great an impact these are having on the environment around the globe – and closer to home in our drinking water sources.

Whilst their spread is vast, their scale is minute: plastic debris come in at no more than  5mm, whilst microplastics are tiny, tiny plastic bits some1,000 times smaller (scientists also talk about nanoplastics at one millionth of a millimetre). As such, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that, at this micro level, they’re finding their way into the cells of all living things, including ourselves: having previously found microplastics in human lungs, heart, intestines, liver, placenta, semen and blood – even breast milk – recent research has now also found them in our brains.

Scientists are still investigating the sources as well as the effects these have on human health, but are expressing growing concern about our increased exposure to these plastics and are looking at links to explain the increasing rates of neurogenerative diseases, and such cancers as of the bowel, as well as increased strokes and heart attacks followed by higher death rates which are now suspected as being caused by the presence of microplastics in the plaque of the carotid artery.
